I handle traffic, misdemeanor, and felony cases in Municipal, County, and District Courts. Traffic includes charges of D.U.I. or D.W.A.I.
In most traffic cases you have a date to appear, your first appearance ( which is usually 30days from the date the ticket was issued ). Don't miss that date, otherwise an arrest warrant will probably be issued. In most instances a plea bargain can be had depending on what happened, and the person's driving record.
With D.U.I. cases it is important to request a hearing with a hearing officer at the Department of Motor Vehicles if you had a breath or blood test which was over .100 because you could lose your license anywhere from 3 months to 1 year depending on whether it is your 1st or 2nd offense.
Also remember if you have been charged with a crime or are the subject of an investigation you should exercise your right to remain silent until you consult with an attorney -- your 5th amendment right. In addition remember a police officer cannot search your car unless he has what is called probable cause or there is some emergency. You can exercise your 4th amendment right and not consent to a search of your home and/or car without a warrant or some exigent circumstance.
